5th Annual Millhill Day of Caring

Friday, May 19th marked TayganPoint’s 5th annual Millhill Day of Caring at the Millhill Child and Family Development Center.

Every spring, TayganPoint volunteers spend a morning at Millhill in Trenton, NJ to give the amazing teachers there a well-deserved break!  TayganPoint volunteers ultimately take over “teacher duties” for a few hours in the classrooms and stay engaged with students (4-6 years old) using a theme that relates to what the students are currently learning about.  This year the theme was gardening and flowers.  TayganPoint volunteers began the morning running around outside in the beautiful weather with the students, who showed off their Millhill outdoor garden to volunteers. Then, volunteers read the book “Planting a Rainbow” to students and followed it up with fun, educational craft time! This year’s craft included creating a flower garden using construction paper, tissue paper, and Popsicle sticks.  Finally, TayganPoint volunteers helped the students plant their own seeds in soil so they can water them at school and watch them grow as a classroom. TayganPoint wrapped up the day by providing classroom supplies for the teachers and a donation to help fund the students’ educational summer field trip.

The Millhill Child and Family Development is a non-profit organization serving abused and neglected children in the Trenton area.  Millhill enriches the well-being of children and families through individualized culturally sensitive, educational and behavioral health services.  TayganPoint’s President, John Cassimiatis, sits on the Millhill Foundation’s Board of Directors.

Throughout the year, Millhill holds donation drives to provide fundamental items like winter coats and school supplies that the students may not otherwise have access to.  Currently, Millhill is collecting items to be distributed at their 4th Annual Health Fair in September 2017.  Specifically, Millhill is looking for everyday items including first aid kits, hygiene items, kitchen items, cleaning supplies, and canned/dried/non-perishable food items.  These everyday items are often overlooked for under-resourced families. Help us keep our Millhill families well stocked with the basics! For questions or additional details about Millhill, please contact Lauren Ettlinger at lettlinger@tayganpoint.com
